|1.0 The town of Oia is situated in the northern part of
Thera, the main island of the Santorini group. Standing near the top of the caldera wall,
it is reached by sea by climbing the stairway visible in this view or by coming overland
from the harbor at Athinios. The earthquake of 6 July 1956 destroyed Oia, but most of the
town has now been rebuilt.
The geography of Santorini
In recent centuries the Aegean volcanic islands of Santorini have
repeatedly changed not only their appearance but their names as well. The ancient Greek
called Santorini Calliste - the most beautiful.
