|8.0 The site that Robert Zahn had excavated at Kamaras in
the valley of Potamos is only a hundred meters or so from the present excavations at
Akrotiri. At the turn of the century he worked close to the red ignimbrite platform
(middle right of the photo) where he found Bronze Age remains that are now stored in the
archaeological museum in Thera.
A Bronze Age Pompeii
Quite unexpectedly, a "Bronze Age Pompeii" was discovered in
1866 under a blanket of pumice on Santorini. For more than 3600 years, its secret had been
concealed, even though vague memories of the volcanic catastrophe had been preserved in
the legends of Greece and Egypt.
