12.0 The two Kameni islands, Nea and Palea Kameni are situated near the center of the caldera. They were formed after the Minoan eruption and developed by repeated eruptions during the last 2000 years. The photograph shows a crater on Nea Kameni and, in the background, the caldera wall of Thera.



The Caldera is filling again

After the catastrophic Minoan eruption, the eruptive activity of Santorini was by no means over. For the last two thousand years, the enormous caldera that had been enlarged and deepened by the eruption of 1640 BC has been the scene of renewed volcanism: the caldera is filling again and the volcanic edifice is changing its shape.
